ALL THE SURF JARGON
Right, lets cut the bullshit here. Nowhere in the World is there perfect surf 365 days a year. If you think there is such a place, carry on smoking what ever it is you're smoking and send us an e-mail from your planet.
Having said that, the Natal South Coast has got to be one of the more consistent areas around. So lets have a quick synopsis of the breaks in the area and don't forget the 20deg Celsius water all year round.
BEST TIMES
For classic winter swells (4-8ft) with lines of corduroy to the horizon and off shore winds every morning May, June, July and early August are the best months. September through October is generally pretty windy with dawn patrols and late afternoon sessions the order of the day. November through April is summer surf in the 3-6ft range. Basically this is fun surf rather than classic waves.
AROUND ANGLE ROCK
Directly in front of Angle Rock are two fairly consistent peaks depending of course on tide, wind and sand movement. On the high tide an evil shorebreak can develop.
About 800m North are the Warner Beach rocks which provide waves of just about every conceivable description. Lefts, rights, shorebreaks, mid-breaks and backline waves are all available depending on how the sand banks have formed. This is the home of world renowned surfers Frabkie Oberholzer (Rip Curl - The Search) and Michael Roscoe. Need we say more?
350m South are the Winklespruit rocks which provide a good right at backline on a low tide and fun midbreaks on a higher tide.
ON THE COAST
Moving further afield, the Crown Jewel is obviously Greenpoint which is a right point break best in the early morning winter offshores. Breaking over a sand bottom this wave offers everything from barrels to down the line speed to unreal round house cutback shoulders.
Other good breaks are Scottburgh (big swell), backbeach, pipeline (no this is not Hawaii), Happy wanderers, Widenham, High Rocks, Umgababa and the beach breaks at Amanzimtoti.
A word of caution is that when on a real surf trip, it is always a good idea to orgaise some form of transport. Even in Hawaii with all the breaks in a seven mile stretch you are always going to be caught short with no wheels.
