Angle Rock Backpackers is quite simply water babies paradise. Yup, if you like it, wet then we've got you covered.
A small confession here, Bruce is an old time wax-head. With 20+ years of surfing behind him he's the man to fill you in on the surf details. However, he can get a bit technical so we've set up another page just for all the details of swells, different breaks etc,etc Just click DETAILS.
The good news for those who want to give it a bash is that surfboards and boogie boards are provided also FREE of charge so you can try it on your own, at any time you wish.
Probably the second best dive spot in South Africa (just behind Sodwana - which is also helleva difficult to get to!) the Aliwal Shoal has it all. Corals, abundant fish life, turtles, dolphins, shark, etc.
The boat launches from a river and then punches through the surf (which can be an experience on its own) and takes you about 5kms out to sea.
Because it is exposed to the open seas, divers on the Aliwal use the drift diving technique where the skipper follows the dive masters' bouy and picks you up when you surface. This is great as you don't have to swim against the currents and use up that precious air.
For those of you who have never dived, we can arrange a four day, 5star PADI Course which is recognised all over the world. Very basically, the course consists of:
Day 1 : Theory, videos, read manuals and discussions
Day 2 : Pool sessions - get familiar with equipment and breathing underwater
Day 3 : 2 Sea dives on the Aliwal with Instructor
Day 4 : 2 Sea dives on the Aliwal with Instructor
If you are after some game fishing, this is a pretty good deal. Marlin are not that common off our coast so we aren't going to bullshit you but there sure are some good other game fish. It is pretty much an all day affair from 6am to 2pm (or sooner if the rock of the boat is not agreeing with you). Refreshments are provided.
The good news is that you can either keep your catch or sell it back to the skipper at R10.00 per kg. But please don't leave in catch in our fridges when you leave!!
